Frederick Holmes And Company, in cooperation with Schulte Fine Art, is proud to present two of the most critically acclaimed artists who beginning in the 1970s became part of the colorfield and action painting movement, along with historic figures like Jules Olitski and Larry Poons. Based in New York, both Hughto and Roth enjoy highly respected reputations for their contributions to the genre. Their work is found in the permanent collections of multiple museums throughout the US and Europe, including the Boston Museum of Fine Art and The Clement Greenberg Collection (Portland Art Museum, Portland, OR) This very special exhibition will include Hughto’s highly praised “diamond” paintings from the 1970s up to his most recent work, “sailboats”. In June 2018, Hughto will be given a solo retrospective at the I.M. Pei Wing of Everson Museum in Syracuse, NY, in celebration of its fiftieth anniversary.
Works by Roth include early work, as well as her recent innovative abstract paintings using specialized paint and papers, and her work in steel. Everson Museum also sponsored a Roth exhibition in May 2015, “Handmade: The Art of Susan Roth”, earning enthusiastic reviews.
The exhibition will be the first time both artists (who are married) have appeared together on the West Coast. The artists will attending the opening Thursday, Oct. 5th and lead a discussion of their work.
